MELBOURNE, April 28 AAP - A survey is being conducted in Victoria in a bid to revealmore about the practice of drink spiking leading to sexual assault.
Victoria Police and the state's Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA) officials saidthe survey was designed to give insight into the prevalence of drug-facilitated sexualassault in the community.
The survey includes a brochure listing options for people who have been victims ofdrink spiking, including contact details of support organisations.
Victoria Police chief commissioner Christine Nixon said drink spiking was a seriousproblem that could have a long-term effect on the whole community.
"The more information we have on the issue, the more we can do about preventing it," she said.
"Through this pilot we hope to raise awareness of this as a crime and make sure everyVictorian is aware of its cause and effects."
CASA House's Marg D'Arcy said it was important victims of crime knew they had rightsto access support and information about their legal and medical options.
"We believe this anonymous survey may encourage more people to speak out about thecrime and reinforce that it's not their fault, regardless of what they have taken or hadto drink," Ms D'Arcy said.
The survey is available through doctors, police stations, health and welfare centresand universities in the Melbourne CBD, Carlton, Collingwood, Fitzroy, Richmond, Prahranand Malvern.
