NSW: Rove Australia's most powerful entertainer
SYDNEY, Dec 13 AAP - Television and radio star Rove McManus has topped a list of Australia'smost influential entertainers.
The 28-year-old host of Channel 10's Rove Live and an Austereo weekend radio programhas beat out singers Kylie Minogue and Kasey Chambers for the top spot on Who Weekly'sPower List 2002.
Others to make it onto the third annual list of local entertainers who made it bigthis year were Jane Turner and Gina Riley, the comedians behind the hugely popular Kathand Kim characters, as well as Newcastle rock group Silverchair.
Skivvied children's entertainers The Wiggles and TV legend Bert Newton also made thelist's top 10.
McManus, a former West Australian stand-up comedian, began his TV career producingand hosting a community television program.
He was signed by Channel Nine in 1999 for his own weekly live comedy program beforejoining Channel 10 a year later.
Rove Live had its third series this year.
Who Weekly entertainment editor Darren Lovell said earning capacity played little inthe judging, which was based mostly on pulling power in terms of audience.
"It's very hard to gauge power but we look at the ability to actually sell out a concertor sell records or get TV shows made or win timeslots or improve the overall ratings ofa network," Mr Lovell said.
"When (Rove) first launched his show ... it came fourth in the ratings, it was beatenby every other network, it struggled and then suddenly by 2002 it was the number one showfor its timeslot.
"He owns the production company which produces Rove Live and then he's gone on to doother things like Austereo on weekends, he has one of the top rating shows on radio onweekends, and he not only starred in but produced probably one of the most successfulARIA awards we've ever had.
"He's got a slate of projects on the boil for Channel 10 next year and just generallypeople love him, he's just the sort of guy everyone loves."
